Location, Climate:
Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and is situated alongside the Northern coastline with the sandy beach of Lahepere Bay less than a 30 minute drive away. The climate in Tallinn is temperate having warm summers and cold winters. The coldest months are from December to February. The best time to visit Tallinn is in June when the weather is mild.
Brief History :
Evidence of human settlement in Tallinn dates back to 5,000 years ago when comb ceramic and corded ware potteries, that were created around 3000 BC, were discovered. A fortress was built in the city in 1050 which served as a trading port between Scandinavia and Russia. The Kingdom of Denmark reigned over Tallinn during the 13th century.
Events, Landmarks, Activities:
Tallinn hosts many festivals and the biggest music event, not just in the city but also all over the country is The Estonian Song Celebration which only happens only once every five years so this is definitely worth-watching out for. Other famous music festivals include the Tallinn Music Week, Ollesummer Festival and Tallinn International Festival Jazzkaar. The best place to start sightseeing is in the Old City where you can find many interesting attractions such as the magnificent Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, St Mary's Cathedral, City Wall, Toompea Hill and Viru Gate. Must-see sites outside the Old City include the Open Air Museum, Tallinn Zoo and Kumu Art Museum.
Transportation:
The Old City is best explored by foot or by cycling since there are a number of bicycle paths in the old city. To explore other areas of Tallinn, there is a good public network of trams and buses as well as trolleybuses.
Tallinn hotels range from small family run hostels to large hotel chains. Most visitors to Tallinn prefer to book their hotel at a discount and in the old city. The Merchants House is a popular boutique hotel nestled between the cobbled streets of the old town.
