Location, Climate: Stuttgart is one of the largest cities in Germany that is situated in Baden-Wurttemberg and consists of numerous hills, parks and valleys. This lovely city is just an hour away from the Swabian Alps and Black Forest. Stuttgart has an oceanic climate meaning that summers are warm and winters are cold. The city center has a warmer temperature and has less snow during winter. Brief History : The first settlers in Stuttgart arrived in the city during the 1st century A.D. building a Roman fort in Cannstatt. Swabia's Duke Liudolf discovered the city in 950 A.D. But it became the home of the Wurttemberg Counts during the 13th century. It was soon named a city and the official residence of the royal family in 1321. Events, Landmarks, Activities: If Munich has Oktoberfest, then Stuttgart has the annual Cannstatter Volksfest which is a 3-week beer fest held between September to October and features different kinds of beer and fun rides including the 60-meter Ferris wheel. Stuttgart is the home of famous automobile companies Mercedes-Benz and Porsche and attracting thousands of tourists each year are its museums and factories. There are also beautiful churches and castles in Stuttgart including St. Eberhard's Cathedral Church, Collegiate Church, Old Castle and New Castle. There are also attractions suited for the whole family such as the Wilhelma Zoo and Carl Zeiss Planetarium. Transportation: The fastest way to get around Stuttgart is via S-Bahn and U-Bahn. For short distances, buses are also advisable. Taxis here are expensive and auto parks are limited. The city is also not bicycle-friendly.
