Sousse is a historic city in Tunisia. It is located on the Gulf of Hammamet along the Mediterranean Sea. The climate of Sousse is a combination of Mediterranean and African with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Some tourists avoid booking discount hotels between July and August because the weather can get too hot. Best time to book a discount hotel is between October and May.
Brief History:
The city was founded by the Phoenicians during the 11th century BC and named it Hadrumetum. During the Punic Wars, the Romans allied with the city. After the downfall of the Romans, the Arabs reigned over the city and called it Susa. It was later on changed to Sousse by the French.
Events, Landmarks, Activities:
One of the largest and most prestigious festivals in Tunisia is the Sousse International Festival which is held from July to August. This annual festival features colorful floats, traditional African dance, live concerts and local culinary specialties. The most visited area in Sousse is the Medina which was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Take a trip at the labyrinth-like Medina to see some of the most spectacular sites in Sousse including the Great Mosque, Traditional Tunisian House and Mosaic Museum.
Transportation:
Most tourists prefer riding a taxi because they are more convenient, but make sure to agree with the rate first before hopping in. Shared taxis are mostly used by the locals because they are more affordable. For a unique traveling experience to Port El Kantaoui, ride a tuk-tuk, mini-train or a horse-drawn carriage.
