Sofia is one of Europe's oldest cities. Archaeological remains that date back 7000 years ago were found in the city that proved human existence during the prehistoric period. Sofia was originally called Serdica which was derived from the Serdi tribe that occupied the area from the 1st century to the 4th century AD.

Sofia hosts numerous festivals annually, but the biggest film festival is the Sofia International Film Festival held in March. This important European film event gathers distinguished guests, celebrities, journalists and movie buffs. Since the city center is compact, most attractions are within walking distance. Make sure to watch out for vehicles since the area is not pedestrianized. Taxis are the most convenient mode of transportation and affordable too. The Metro is perfect for traveling to other districts.
