Location, Climate: San Francisco is one of the top tourist destinations in the United States that is situated on the edge of the San Francisco Peninsula and stretches from the San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. The weather in San Francisco is basically mild having dry summers and wet winters. The best time to visit is during fall season when it is not that foggy and rainy. Brief History: The Yelamu tribe was the first settlers in San Francisco but the Spaniards took over in 1769. The city gained independence from the Spaniards in 1821 and was soon reigned by the Mexicans. Englishman Williamson Richardson named the city Yerba Buena in 1835 and the United States took over California and changed the name to San Francisco in 1846. Events, Landmarks, Activities: San Francisco hosts many festivals each year and the most famous are its jazz fests including the North Beach Jazz Festival in July, San Jose Jazz Festival in August and San Francisco Jazz Festival in October. There are lots of great places to see and lots of fun things to do in San Francisco. If you love to shop and dine, then visit the Fisherman's Wharf but if you prefer designer brands, and then head down to Union Square. Explore different cultures by visiting Chinatown, North Beach, Mission District, Japan Center and Castro Street. Transportation: The best way to explore San Francisco is via walking but make sure to be aware of your surroundings. Biking is also a good alternative as well as the metro, bus and cable car. Driving is not advisable because of the traffic.
