Location, Climate: Salzburg is one of the largest cities in Austria that is situated on the riverbanks of Salzach and surrounded by the Kapuzinerberg and Monchsberg mountains. The city experiences continental climate with influences from the Alps having warm summers and cold winters. The coldest months are January and February while frequent rainfalls occur between June to August. Brief History: There were traces that showed human settlement in Salzburg during Neolithic Period, but the first recorded settlers in the city were the Celts who arrived there in the 5th century BC. The Roman Empire combined the separate settlements making it one city in 15 BC. It was called Juvavum in 45 AD and was also recognized as a Roman town. Events, Landmarks, Activities: Thousands of tourists travel to Salzburg every July, not only to enjoy summer but also join the annual Salzburg Festivalhich is a prestigious drama and music fest held at Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birthplace. The best place to start sightseeing in Salzburg is at the Old Town where one can find the best sights in the city such as the Salzburg Cathedral, Hohensalzburg Castle, Franziskaner Church, St Peter's Abbey, Nonnberg Abbey and Alte Residenz. You can also find the street where Mozart was born namely Getreidegasse in this area which is now a famous shopping district. Transportation: Since most attractions are at the Old Town, it is best to explore them by foot. Salzburg also has excellent bike paths so renting a bike is a good option. There are also buses and taxis within the city.
