Riga is the capital of Latvia and also the largest city in the country. Brief History :
Albert Bremen discovered Riga in 1201 making it the headquarters of the Northern Crusades. The city became a major trade center during the Hanseatic League, but after its downfall the city was ruled by the Swedish Empire followed by the Russian Empire. Riga was declared the capital of Latvia in 1918.

Riga hosts various festivals annually so find the one that suits your interest. Show your dance moves at the Riga Salsa Festival in August while movie buffs catch acclaimed films during the Arsenals Film Festival in September. The perfect place to start your sightseeing is at the Old Town where you can find the Town Square which features the Statue of Roland and St. Peter's Church; the Cathedral Square which has the Riga Cathedral and Latvian Parliament; and the Riga Castle which houses the National History Museum of Latvia.
Transportation:
The Old Town does not allow cars so it is best to explore it by foot, riding a bicycle or taxi. There are also buses, trolleys and trams which can be accessed by purchasing the e-ticket sold in vending machines, newspaper kiosks and ticket offices.
