Brief History:
The history of Phi Phi dates back to the prehistoric era. The two islands were originally called “Pulau Api-Api” which means “The Fiery Isle”. The name was derived from the word “Pokok Api-Api which means “Fiery Tree” and this kind of tree are found all over the island. The islands' name was soon changed to the Malay word “Phi Phi”.
Events, Landmarks, Activities:
There are many traditional events in Phi Phi Islands and the most celebrated is the Laanta Lanta Festival which is held every March at the Lanta Old Town. This festival features traditional entertainment and authentic food. Phi Phi gained recognition because of the movie “The Beach” which starred Leonardo Di Caprio. This famous Hollywood film was shot at the stunning Maya Bay which consists of several pristine beaches and surrounded by beautiful cliffs.
