Location, Climate: Perth is the capital of Western Australia that is situated along a coastal plain right in the heart of Swan River and surrounded by the Indian Ocean and Darling Scarp. The climate in Perth is Meditteranean having moderate to frequent rainfalls. Those who prefer sunny days should visit Perth between December to March. The wettest months are from May to September. Brief History: Admiral Sir James Stirling discovered Perth in 1829 making it the headquarters of a British settlement. Perth started to progress and became the state's center of administration and business. It earned the nickname “City of Lights” when the residents opened all their lights including the streetlights during John Glenn's orbit the earth and space. Events, Landmarks, Activities: There are lots of annual festivals in Perth, but the most-attended is the Australia Day Fireworks in January which is held at the Kings Park along Swan River and features spectacular fireworks and laser light displays. Australia's symbol is the kangaroo. Visit the Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park if you want to get up close with semi-wild kangaroos. Perth is famous for its beautiful beaches including the Scarborough Beach, Cottesloe Beach and the nudist Swanbourne Beach. Enjoy more of the outdoors by visiting Kings Park which features the Royal Kings Park Tennis Club and State War Memorial. Transportation: There are areas in Perth that can be explore by foot or bicycle such as the city center and Fremantle. The fastest way to get to the suburbs is via train but you can also choose to rent a car and enjoy a road trip.
