Moscow
Location, Climate: Moscow is the capital of Russia and the most populated city not only in the country but all over Europe. This megacity is located along Moskva River and features many “ring roads” that enclaves the city. The weather in Moscow can get extreme having warm to hot summers and cool to freezing winters. The hottest months in Moscow are from May to September while snow is present from November to March. Brief History: The name of the city was derived from the river where it stands in, the Moskva River. Moscow was first mentioned in Prince Yuri Dolgorukiy's letter to the prince of Novhorod-Siversky in 1147. The prince of Rostov built a wooden wall to protect the city in 1156 and called it Kremlin which is now the home of the President of Russia. Events, Landmarks, Activities: The best time to go to Moscow is in December when the Russian Winter Festival is held. This event features folk music performers, troika rides, ice-sculpting and snowman building. Music lovers can also enjoy watching live classical music during the December Nights Festival Moscow. The best place to start sightseeing in Moscow is at the Red Square where you can find many attractions such as the State History Museum, St Basil Cathedral and Lenin Mausoleum. Other must-see sites include the Kremlin, Church of the Ascension, Novodevichy Convent, Bolshoi Theatre and Tretyakov Gallery. Transportation: The best way to explore Moscow is by taking the metro which is cheaper and faster. If you are planning to stay in one area, it is still better to get around by foot.
