Brief History:
Leiden was built on burcht van Leiden, which is an artificial hill situated on the convergence of the Old and New Rhine rivers. The settlement was known as “Leithon” during the Roman period around circa 860. Holy Roman Emperor Henry III ousted Leiden in 1047, but Countess Ada of Holland decided to live in the city during her battle with her uncle Count William I of Holland.
