Brief History:
The city's name was derived from Mount Kinabalu, which is a magnificent mountain located northeast of Kota Kinabalu. The name “Kinabalu” came from the word “Aki Nabalu” which means “revered place of the dead” while the name “Aki” means “grandfather or ancestors” and “Nabalu” is the Dusun term for “mountain”.

Kota Kinabalu hosts several festivals annually and the latest addition to its events is the Kota Kinabalu Food Fest which recently debuted July of 2011. This 2-week gastronomic fest is participated by numerous restaurants, bars, lounges, food stands, gourmet products, eateries and wine suppliers. The most-visited attractions in Kota Kinabalu include the Atkinson Clock Tower which sits perfectly on top of a hill, the Green Connection which is a science discovery center and aquarium, and the Signal Hill Observatory which gives spectacular views of the city and South China Sea.
Transportation:
The city center is compact and flat which makes it walkable. Taxis are convenient and most are metered, but those who want to save up can take the public bus. Those who want to explore more of Kota Kinabalu can rent a car.
