Cozumel is a beautiful island in the region of Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. It is situated across Playa del Carmen and near Yucatan Channel. The climate of Cozumel is tropical Caribbean with both dry and wet seasons. There are more discount hotels available during the month of September, when there are less tourists. Make sure to book a discount hotel in advance if you are planning to travel between April and May because of the school break.
Brief History:
The first settlers in Cozumel were the Maya peoples who arrived in the area during the 1st millennium AD. There were also Olmec artifacts discovered in the island which proved early existence. Spanish explorer Juan de Grijalva visited Cozumel around 1518 and was later on followed by Hernan Cortes. Both were welcomed peacefully by the Maya peoples.
Events, Landmarks, Activities:
The most significant event in Cozumel is the Festival of El Cedral which is usually held every month of April or May. This 5-day historic festival features live music, fairs, bullfights, competitions and traditional feasts. Cozumel is famous for its water sports facilities including kitesurfing, para-sailing and there is also a tourist submarine and dolphinariums. The best place to go shopping is at the Cozumel shipping docks while the downtown Cozumel offers some of the best restaurants, bars, discos and event venues.
Transportation:
Cozumel is easy to explore on foot, but you can find more convenience in riding a taxi. The more adventurous can rent a car or a “moto” (scooter). Make sure you are an experienced rider when driving a scooter to avoid any accident.
