Location, Climate:
Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and also one of the largest metropolitan areas in South America. It is situated on the estuary of River Plate and features four defined seasons. Brief History:
The first European to get to the River Plate was Spanish explorer Juan Diaz de Solis who arrived in that area in 1516. He was killed during a battle with the Charrua tribe which is now known as Uruguay which ended his conquest. Buenos Aires was originally called Ciudad de Nuestra Senora Santa Maria del Buen Ayre which means “City of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Fair Winds".
Events, Landmarks, Activities:
There are many musical events in Buenos Aires that attracts thousands of tourists each year including the Quilmes Rock in March or April, Buenos Aires Jazz Festival in April and Creamfields Buenos Aires in November. The best area to start sightseeing is at the Micro Centro where you can find several attractions including the Palacio Barolo, Casa Rosada, Casa de la Cultura, Obelisco and Florida Mall.
Transportation:
Traffic can get really bad in Buenos Aires so some prefer walking to get to their destination. The main public transport in the city are the “colectivos” (buses) and “subte” (underground train) which are both fast and inexpensive. Avail of the RFID card called SUBE to get a ride on the bus or metro.
