Brief History:
The first documentation of Basel’s name dates from 374 AD when it was still called “Basilia” or “Basilea” which means “kingship”. The Roman archaeological site Augusta Raurica was discovered just 20km from Basel and today this is an important open air museum.

Basel is famous for its Carnival which is locally known as Basler Fasnacht, a 3-day festival which starts on the Monday after Ash Wednesday.
